This qualification reflects the role of workers who provide services to clients experiencing mental health disorders. They may provide counselling, referral, advocacy and education/health promotion services. These workers are required to have high level specialist knowledge, skills and competencies especially in regard to laws affecting people with mental health issues, the range of services available to them and health issues related to mental health.

Mental is a common illness in Australia with one in five of us expected to experience some kind of mental disorder between the ages of 16 and 85. In some cases, a percentage of these will experience more than one type of mental disorder.
With more and more Australians affected every day, there has never been a better time to embark on your career in mental health. This specialist course will provide you with the skills and knowledge to successfully support people suffering one or more mental disorders in a range of settings including community and health care services.
During your course you will learn how to:
Develop relationships with a diverse range of children and adults with a variety of mental health illnesses
Advocate on behalf of children or adults impacted by drug and alcohol dependency
Understand the complex nature of mental illness and provide support including referring your clients to specialist services
Develop and implement care plans to support improvement in mental health illness
Implement a range of approaches to mental health care including person centred and recovery oriented approaches
Carry out a range of research and apply evidence based practice
Provide and implement intervention, health prevention and mental illness promotion programs
and much more
You will also need to complete 160 hours of work placement in a recognised mental health facility.
